Hilary Duff is putting some of her most personal stories into her next album, Luck … or Something, out Feb. 20. In a Glamour cover story published Feb. 17, the singer and actress said she felt ready to share music that reflects who she is now, after years of major life changes.
Some tracks point directly at family tension. Duff said songs like We Dont Talk and The Optimist touch on relationships that take up the most space in a persons life, even when they are messy. She added that being born into a family does not guarantee everyone stays close, and that she can only control her side of things.
Duff also addressed the song Mature, which she said draws from a brief relationship she had when she was younger with someone older. She described it as not illegal, but inappropriate in hindsight, and noted that working since age 10 made it hard to build typical relationships with people her own age.
She also spoke warmly about the friendships she has formed through parenting, saying shared values matter most.
